Rock Wallabies

Allied Rock Wallabies

Allied Rock Wallabies, thrive in the rocky terrain and dense vegetation of Magnetic Island. Their subtle colouring provides excellent camouflage, making them hard to spot among the rocks. These agile creatures navigate their rugged habitat with ease, aided by short toenails on their hind feet that allow for quick, sure-footed movement.

If you're keen to see these fascinating animals, here are two top spots to visit:

  1. Bremner Point in Arcadia, located near Geoffrey Bay’s snorkel trail and some of the island’s most iconic rock formations and caves. Swing by Arcadia Bakehouse for a morning treat before heading out to spot the wallabies in their natural setting.

  2. The Helipad in Nelly Bay offers prime views of the marina, perfect for watching boats come and go. There's also a footpath for kids to ride bikes and scooters, and a nearby playground for extra family fun.

While some people may suggest feeding the wallabies, it's best for them to forage naturally. However, if you must, stick to safe options like carrots, sweet potatoes, rockmelon, apples, pawpaw, and wallaby pellets (available from the local newsagency near Geoffrey Bay).

If you spot a wallaby in danger or injured, please contact Wallaby Refuge at 4758 1457 or 0400 243 842.
