Aquasearch Aquarium
Aquasearch Aquarium
Known affectionately as 'The Giant Clam Man,' Dr. Richard Braley has devoted his work to studying giant clams. His passion for these majestic creatures was sparked by a remarkable encounter with a giant clam in Ha'apai, a region in central Tonga, more than forty years ago. This transformative experience led Dr Braley to make Magnetic Island his home, where he conducted extensive research on the Great Barrier Reef. Renowned for its exceptionally high-density population of giant clams, the reef was the perfect location for his groundbreaking investigations. In 1998, Dr. Braley established the Aquasearch Aquarium on Magnetic Island. To this day, Rick shows dedication to the underwater world of Maggie, assisting in caring for the island’s two snorkel trails and sharing the Aquasearch Aquarium with tourists.
The marine display at Aquasearch Aquarium on Magnetic Island showcases a wide array of marine life, including hard and soft corals, anemones, trochus, and a diverse range of coral reef fish. Visitors can marvel at the vibrant and colourful underwater world represented in the display tanks, which highlight the beauty and diversity of these marine species. The aquarium is not staffed during the day, and an honesty box is at the entrance.
